近代上海外文地名NANTAO含义辨析

摘　　要：近代外文文献中的上海地名NANTAO,其含义即指沪语中的“南头”,读音可能来自于闽南语或粤语,随着上海开埠而传入。N ANT A O所指区域的变化与“南市”相似,初指上海县城以东、法租界以南的区域,民国初年开始扩大到上海县城,1928年上海特别市成立后亦指沪南区。NANTAO,a Shanghai’s place name in modern foreign language literature,means"south end"in Shanghai language.Its pronunciation may have come from Southern Fujian dialect or Cantonese,which was introduced in along with the opening of Shanghai.The transformation of the area referred to as NANTAO is similar to that of"Nanshi".It initially referred to the area east of Shanghai County and south of French Concession,which was expanded to Shanghai County in the early years of the Republic of China.After the establishment of Shanghai Special Municipality in 1928,it also referred to the Southern District of Shanghai.
