贝德士与田伯烈之《侵华日军暴行录》编撰始末

摘　　要：英国记者田伯烈在编撰《侵华日军暴行录》的过程中,得金陵大学教授贝德士襄助最多。他在该书筹划阶段即与贝德士讨论,并从后者及其同仁处获得大量核心文献。田伯烈仅用四十余日即完成初稿,期间分批将稿件邮寄给贝德士。贝德士对田伯烈过于追求速度、过多强调暴行、资料处理不均、忽略隐私保护等问题提出异议。田伯烈接受部分意见,但在核心问题上坚持己见。贝德士允许田伯烈使用南京安全区资料,但希望他与其他教会领袖磋商,同时给出详细修改建议。田伯烈迅速将初稿寄往出版社,随后返回伦敦商讨出版事宜,该书比原计划提前一年推出。虽然贝德士与田伯烈在编撰该书的技术处理上有所分歧,但彼此根本目标一致,双方从不同层面共同推动了正义的伸张。Harold John Timperley,the British journalist,received great assistances from Miner Searle Bates who was a professor of Nanking University,during he compiled the book Japanese Terror in China.Timperley began to discuss the book with Bates since the planning stage,and obtained a large number of core documents from Bates and his colleagues.Timperley finished the first draft about forty days and mailed the manuscript to Bates in batches.Bates raised his objections to Timperley’s excessive pursuit of writing speed,over emphasis on atrocities,disproportionate processing of materials and neglect of privacy protection.Timperley accepted some of these opinions,but insisted on his own views on the core issues.Bates authorized him to use the material from the International Committee of Nanjing Safety Zone,but requested him to consult with other church leaders,and gave detailed suggestions for modification.Timperley sent the first draft to the publishing house immediately and then returned to London to discuss the publication of the book,which was published one year later ahead of schedule.Although Timperley and Bates had disagreements on some technical issues during the compilation of the book,they shared with the same fundamental goals and jointly promoted the upholding of justice from different levels.
