摘　　要：记忆是认识人的本性真实感觉的关键 ,它使一个人的行为与其整个人生经历保持一致。记忆与选择是创造连续感的根本 ,是每个个体心理上对获得一个整体人生感的需求。本文通过对乔治·艾略特早期作品的解读 ,分析与阐述艾略特关于记忆与偶然以及记忆与人物个性发展之间的关系的思想 ,从而展现艾略特的记忆观是她构筑其小说人物个性的重要组成部分。Memory is the key point in recognizing the characteristics of an individual. It keeps the past alive and gives a sense of continuity between one's past life and present life. Thus, by retaining this sense of continuity,memory satisfies people's psychological demands for totality of life. Through a re-reading of her early novels,this article tries to give an analysis and illustration of George Eliot's ideas on the relationship between memory and contingency, and the relationship between memory and the development of characters' personality. It shows that memory is an essential element in creating her characters in the novel.
