Edward P.Jones's The Known World represents the little-known history that blacks were slave owners in pre-Civil War American South. The paper explores the root cause of Henry Townsend's change from a black slave to a slaveholder embodied in his constant but unsuccessful search for self-identity.It argues that African-Americans can reconstruct their identities by way of turning to their past.Jones, having delineated real characters and incidents in his work, utters black slaves' different attempts to seek for their identities and offers his interrogative reflection upon modern African Americans' construction of ethnic identities.
