摘　　要：１９８０年，美国十年一度的人口统计结果显示：７０年代美国非大都市区人口增长率超过大都市区增长率，这在１８１０年以来尚属首次，因而在美国研究城市的学者中引起不小的震动。很多学者据此得出大城市已经衰落的结论。其代表人物美国联邦农业部的人口统计专家艾尔文·...Abstract Many scholars concluded that large American cities were on the wane when the population of suburban areas first exceeded that of urban areas in the 1970s. By analyzing the history of American metropolitan districts, one finds that the main trend in American urbanization in the 20th century is the development of metropolitan districts, especially large ones. The horizontal expansion centered on metropolises, enlarging their urban and suburban areas continually and raising the level of urbanization uninterruptedly, can also be called metropolitanization.
