摘　　要：英语中的虚拟语气是极其常见的现象,无论是在口语中或是书面语中,都俯拾皆是。一般地说,在英语小说或故事中,含蓄条件句的出现率似乎比带有条件的主从复合句多些;它不仅出现于虚拟语气,而且还可包含在陈述语气和祈使语气的句中。本文拟着重探讨含蓄条件的若干表现方式。Adverbial clauses of condition are generally introduced by such conjunctions as if, provided,providing and supposing. But very often the condition is not explicitly expressed but implied. Asentence with the condition implied is called a sentence of implied condition. The condition may be implied: a) in the first of two coordinate members or clauses con-nected by or, and or by no conjunction at all; and b) in a clause introduced by but (that), butwhat or only (that), which explains the non-fulfilment of the action or state mentioned in themain clause. The condition may also be hinted at: a) by the subject in the form of a noun, aninfinitive, an infinitive clause, etc; b) by an attribute in the form of an adjective, a phrase or aclause; c) by an adverbial in the form of an adverb, a phrase, an infinitive, etc; and d) bythe context.
