Linguistic theory has been largely based on the anguage of a mythical unflawed adult who is beyond the stage of learning the language;however,We now know that human beings are never ideal speakers and hearers. In recent years, linguists pay more and more attention to exceptional types of language or language use, which they think can provide a different linguistic model that is somewhere between order and chaos. This paper intends to show, through examples from various sources and through the writers' study of Chinese stutter, what insights theoretical linguistics can gain from the study of exceptional langnages.
