摘　　要：1840—1842年,英国政府向一个远离万里、拥有世界1/3人口的东方大国,发动了一场持续了三年多的战争。这场战争引起了英国民众的震惊和密切的关注。这种情形,甚至使在华的英美商人都感觉到了:“满载中国问题的文章,终于在欧洲报刊上出现了。大量的时事小册子,已经摆到公众面前,评论、报纸一页接一页,一栏又一栏刊载着讨论中国问题的评论。”What Was the popular attitude of British people to the Opium war? The historians have not yet given a clear answer until today. Basing on some British periodicals of 1840-1842, such as The Times and The Northern Star, the author made some research on the subject, by dealing with the attituds of two social group, the middle. class and working class represented by Chartists. According to the historitic facts, most of which was used for the first time, the author inclines to believe that the majo- rity of British people opposed the Opium War at that time.
