摘　　要：具有灿烂文化的中国和其他东方文明古国近代科学技术落后的原因同欧洲文艺复兴以后科学技术蓬勃发展的原因是同一个问题的两个方面。讨论这个举世关心的问题对探索科学技术发展的规律和东方国家实现科技现代化的道路都有现实意义。On the basis of a brief review of the history of the rise and fall of China’s metallurgy, the paper tries to explore the main causes for the lagging behind of China’s metallurgy in recent times from the following respects: social constraints, deficiencies in metallurgical theories, bad management and neglect of education. Based on the structural analysis of the causes, the authors emphasize the importance to the fulfilment of the modernization programme for science and technology establishment of contingents of cadres who are both specialists and have political consciousness, able managers, scientists and technicians who combine theory with practice and skilled workers who have creativity.
