Some Notes on the Inscription on Zhao’s Dagger-axe

摘　　要：1988年5月山西省考古研究所和太原市文管会联合发掘了太原南郊金胜村第251号春秋墓,出土文物极为丰富,总数达3000余件。其中有青铜礼乐器、兵器、车马器、工具、生活用具和玉器等;墓室东北有附葬的车马坑,车16辆、马44匹。1992年春,我们在对此墓出土器物进行整理、修复工作中,于墓主人内棺附近出土的一件铜戈(编号658)上发现了铭文。Coded 251, this large Autumn and Spring tomb at Jinsheng Village near Taiyuan underwent excavation in May 1988, and yielded abundant funeral objects. Although archaeologists did not run into any written material on the spot, they found an inscription of five characters on a bronze dagger-axe (coded 658) originally placed near the inner coffin, when they were sorting and restoring the unearthed objects. The characters can be read as 'dagger-axe used by Zhao Meng. 'According to the historical annals, there were altogether five Zhao Meng in Zhao's family during the Spring and Autumn period. Judging by the date and location of the tomb and the social status of the tomb owner, this Zhao Meng should be Zhao Jianzi of later Spring and Autumn period who administered his office in Jinyang area.
