It eased thelong conflict with the south,and led the whole country into a period of peaceful devel-opwent.However,because of his class limitations and for lack of the will to entirely e-mancipate all the nationalities,and particularly owing to his growing desire of keepingpersonal power,he repudiated the differences between the south and the North,andcarried out a policy of forced assimilation later on. It again intensified the North- South friction and gave foreign powers the opportunity to interfere in the internal af-fairs of Sudan. The experience and lessons left by Nimeri are indeed worty thinkingabout.
