The crux of the US-Japanese economic contradictions and rivalry lies in their sharp differences in trade and investment, extreme imbalance of their international financial positions and their confrontational attitudes toward each other. How to eliminate the above-mentioned discrepancy leads to a series of conflicts between the two sides on price, exchange rate, trade barriers at home and abroad and quotas. Both the US and Japan are confronted with difficulties in their respective national strength, economic system, savings deposits and investment, education and training and enterprise management. All of this are unfavourable conditions for their competition and constitute the root cause of their differences. Over the past few years the American economy has seen some recovery while Japan finds its economy in a tight corner. This could only be reguarded as a temporary alteration, instead of a fundamental turn, in the long-term balance of economic force which is not in favour of the United States.
