摘　　要：在我国乃至世界各地地震学界,人们对张国民教授的名字是并不陌生的。每当大地晃动的时刻,人们总会看到一位神情严肃、精神专注地工作着的瘦削中年人的身影。他就是国家地震局地震分析预报专家张国民教授。 人们不会忘记:1990年6月21日当地时间零时30分(格林威治时间6月20日21时0分)伊朗西北部吉兰省鲁德巴尔一带发生了7.3级强烈地震。据《德黑兰时报》报道。The middle-aged Professor Zhang Guomin, an expert on seismic analysis and prediction, impressed the Iranian colleagues favorably, who made a true report, in the nick of time, on the slim likelihood of another powerful earthquakes around the Tehran area after the first one struck in a city in Gilan Province in northwestern Iran. With high appraisals from all walks of life in tan, this analysis relieved people from fears of another quake and soon set them at ease.Thus people were keen to know about his story: How was he able to understand so well the seismic activities in a foreign land of earthquakes and foresee their movement?Zhang Guomin was born in a poor farmer's family near Shanghai. He became one of the first seismography- major student at the University of Science and Technology of China. A postgraduate of geophysics later he was tutored by the well-known geophysicist Fu Chengyi. It was the devastationg earthquake that struck in Xing Tai in 1966 that prompted him and his colleagues to start the seismic prediction research on the quake site. There a scene of devastation met his eye. Encouraged by the late Premier Zhou Enlai, who was also present on the quake site, and touched by the sad-looking survivors waiting in the hope that scientists could do something, Zhang Guomin made up his mind to devote his whole life to this great cause.Seismic prediction is a multidisciplinary science. Newly developed in China, it remains a hard nut to crack. Before Liberation in 1949, there was only one seismostation with 3 technicians in the whole country. Within the 4 years after the earthquake in Xing Tai, more than 200 seismostations were set up on the initiative of the late Premier Zhou Enlai. Zhang Guomin was one of the organizers of the Beijing team, who took charge of seismic prediction. Over the dozens of years in the past, he has alwaysbeen working in the forefront.Earthquakes result in catastrophies, yet only during the quakes can scientists study their laws for up till now no simulation of earthquakes can be create
