From 1720 to 1740,within 20 years the cultural milieu in English society had undergone dramatic changes. Two important novels,i.e.,Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders and Samuel Richardson's Pamela, mirror in a way such multi-dimensional transformation. These two books are strikingly analogous in their subject-matter:both heroines start as poor maid-servants courted and/or seduced by their young masters, and both strive arduously for a better life. However, these fictional female characters take very different roads seeking fulfillment, which is worth more attention. In the view that the Novel is the main literary form emerged in the formative years of the so called western'Modern'society and its protagonists are representative images of the modern'Self',this paper will focus its discussion on the evolution of the'hero'em- bodied in these two key novels.
