Modern fraternities were created and nationally developed among American college students from 1820 s.They rapidly became the dominating student organizations in most American colleges and universities. They formed a system of distinctive rituals and customs based on secrecy and exclusiveness.Fraternities and sororities not only echoed the social needs of college students, but enhanced their socialization,so that they could adjust themselves to the urbanization and industrialization of American society. However, the secrecy and some behaviors such as hazing caused criticism and suppress from the college administration and outside society.Generally speaking, fraternities and sororities were very critical in shaping a kind of American college life.
