The superior cervical ganglia(SCG)of youngling, young adult and adult Sprague—Dawley rats were respectively homografted into the caudate nucleus of 48 adult rats in which the dopamine system in substantia nigra had been unilaterally destroyed by 6—hydroxydopamine.After survival period from 1 to 2 months, the grafted tissues treated by Nissl stain and formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde—induced monoamine fluorescencemethods were observed. Results showed that the ganglionic neurons of the youngling SCG transplanted in 18 recipients were almost all lost.Young adult SCG grafts in 9 of the 17 recipients showed surviving neurons(52.94%).The surviving neurons of adult SCG grafts in 8 of the 13 recipients could be observed(61.54%).The last two groups were not markedly dif- ferent(P>0.05).The surviving neurons were small in number. The surviving neurons were often distributed in the peripheral area of the grafts.Their cytoplasm was deeply stained by cresyl violet. Sometimes, the SIF cell might be seen. The areas that neurons had survived and the interface be- tween the host and graft had a large number of proliferating capillaries and glial cells.Under fluores- cence microscope,a even specific green fluorescence indicating the presence of catecholamine(CA)was observed in the surviving ganglionic neurons and SIF cells. This paper discussed the factors influencing the survive of transplanted ganglionic neurons.
