Objective To study the relationship between infant touch and infant's sleep. Method 124 newborn infants with the average total sleeping time less than 17 hours were divided into two groups. Touch intervention group and control group. In addition to conventional care, infants in touch-intervention group were also given standard touch for over 3 month with twice a day and 15-20 minutes per time. Infant's sleep pattern was evaluated at 42 days, 3 months and 6 months respectively after intervention. Result The average duration of infant infant's daily sleeping was increased dramatically after 42 days and 3 months of touch intervention. An obvious reduction of both the frequency and duration of night waking with cries among those infants were observed after receiving 42 days, 3 months and 6 months touch intervention. Both incidence and sensitivity of sleep disorder were decreased and become mild as compared with control group. Touch intervention also led to an earlier establishment of infant's regular sleeping pattern. (P<0.05) Conclusion Touch intervention is favorable for infant's growth and development by benefiting from a high-quality sleeping pattern with less sleep disorder and earlier establishment of regular sleeping time.
