purposes are generally assumed to affect a reader's text processing strategies and reading outcome, but few studies have been conducted to confirm this assumption. The present study examines this issue through an experiment on 18 Chinese college students. Before the experiment a questionnaire survey was conducted among 100 students to solicit their purposes for English reading in non-classroom settings. A total of 16 reading purposes were identified and classified into three major categories. In addition, a review of relevant literature on L2 reading yielded three other categories of reading strategies adopted by Chinese learners of English. Based on the survey and review, the reading purposes of the 18 subjects were analyzed. The results showed that those subjects who read for information adopted significantly more macro-text processing strategies and those who read for improving English adopted significantly more micro-text processing strategies.
