Objective To observe the effects of sympathetic denervation of the liver on the blood flow in the normal and chemically injured rabbit liver. Methods Twenty healthy rabbits were divided evenly into 2 groups: control group and acute liver injury group (by Carbon Tetrachloride, CCL4). Chemical denervation was achieved by injection of 6-OHDA (2 ml, 100 mg/L) through the mesenteric vein of jejunum loop in rabbits in both groups. Mean blood flow velocity (MBV), mean blood flow (MBF), and resistant index (RI), and pulsant index (PI) of the artery were evaluated in every group before and at 30, 60, 120, and 180 min after injection, respectively. Results Chemical denervation led to significant increase of MBV and MBF, and decrease of RI and PI in the hepatic artery. However, the parameters of portal vein blood flow remained unchanged. However, under the condition of acute liver injury, chemical denervation led to significant increase of MBV and MBF for both the portal vein and hepatic artery, and decrease of RI and PI in the hepatic artery. Conclusion Sympathetic denervation can alleviate the vascular resistance and increase the blood flow in the hepatic artery. The same effect may be also found in the portal vein under the condition of acute liver injury.
