It is very common to reuse disposable plastic insulin syringes in clinical practice. Experiences in reuse of thousands of disposable insulin syringes and results of microbiological examination after reuse are reported. No matter how many injections were done daily, the syringe was replaced after two days. The needle of used syringe was sterilized with alcohol swab and covered with needle cap. All injections and observation of possible side effects were done by nurses. In 55 diabetic patients, syringes were reused for 4 times within 2 d in 24 diabetics, totally 1960 times; for 6 times in 25 cases, totally 3100 times of 344 times. No side effects such as red swollen, itch of skin and subcutaneous masses were found in all cases. In 8 cases, the syringes were reused for 1-7 d, and bacteriological cultural examinations were made on needles and syringes. No positive bacterium was found in all cultural dishes. It is concluded that it is quite safe to reuse disposable insulin syringes for 4-6 times within 2 d.
