摘　　要：福斯特是一名自觉的反欧洲民族中心主义斗士还是一个彻底的殖民主义者 ?文章从福斯特对大英帝国的双重认识、对福斯特人物形象理解、福斯特与康拉德比较等三个方面论证了反驳了上述两种观点。指出福斯特的矛盾性和两面性使他作品中出现殖民和反殖民双音齐鸣的现象 ,并对阅读现代文学中易出现的误区提出克服的办法。Centering around the question whether E. M. Foster is a complete colonist or an anticolonist, this paper analyzes his dual thoughts on the British Empire, his acceptance of foreign cultures and how to correctly understand the characters in his work A Passage to India, coming to a conclusion that his duality and contradiction echo both his colonialism and anticolonialism. It also proposes that misunderstandings be avoided in modern literature reading.
