摘　　要：“新形式主义”是 2 0世纪 80年代兴起于美国的诗歌流派 ,其最基本的特征是传统英语诗歌格律的回归 ,同时作为诗人和理论家的提摩太·斯蒂尔是这个流派中最早进行创作而且影响最大的人物之一。他从韵文的地位、概念的混乱和唯美派的影响这三个方面对自由诗体进行了批判。本文在肯定他的理论合理性的同时 ,对其彻底否定自由诗体的极端性提出了质疑。The paper is a critical review of the ″New Formalist″ poetics of Timothy Steele. ″New Formalism″, of which Timothy Steele is one of the representatives in America, is a literary movement that came into being in the 1980s and is characterized by the return of metrics to the contemporary poetic scene. While acknowledging the legitimacy of his theories, the paper challenges his absolute denial of the free verse as a literary tradition.
