摘　　要：刘承是近代史上藏书最多的私人藏书家。民国初年他兴建了嘉业堂藏书楼,其藏书不拘于宋元精椠,还相当重视明清两代书籍,收藏了大量稿本、抄本;其藏书思想也颇为开明,他把藏书开放借阅,同时又把大量珍秘古籍刊刻流通,而且嘉业堂刻书选择优秀底本,校勘严格,刊刻精美,向为世人所重,这些都对中华文化的保存、传播起了很大的作用,而嘉业堂的衰落也同样给后人留下了诸多思考。Liu Cheng-gan, the largest keeper of library in the modern history of China, made huge investments in ancient books and built up Jia-ye-tang Library in the first years of the Republic of China. The Library not only collected highly-qualified printings and books made in the Song and Yuan dynasties, but also took effort in keeping those printed in the Ming and Qing periods, bringing in great amounts of manuscripts and hand-written copies. Liu, open-minded as he was, would always open the Library to readers and scholars, and printed and inscribed many rare books and treasured copies for the reading public, with all of them carefully chosen and through serious proof-reading, elegantly made, and thus was spoken highly of even in our times. The books printed and kept by the Library did much in carrying forward Chinese culture, while its decline leaves much for the rethinking of later generations about problems in library keeping and management at the same time.
