The effects of mimic endemic monotonous diet (EM diet) susceptible to Keshan disease and that supplemented with Ca or/and Se on growth and metabolism of rats were studied. The results demonstrated that Ca content in the monotonous diet consisted of grains cultivated from Keshan disease district was low prominently as well as Se. The serum Ca level and blood GSH-Px activity of rats kept on the EM diet were significantly lower than those of rats kept on stock diet. The growth rate and serum total protein were significantly lower than those of the rats kept on stock diet, and the activities of several enzymes (GOT, GPT, LDH, α-HBDH, CK) were obviously deviated. When the EM diet was supplemented with Ca alone, the growth rate and enzymes activity deviation were significantly improved and regularly approached to those of the stock diet group. In the growth retardation and metabolism deviation induced by EM diet, low Ca played an impor-tant role. When the endemic diet was supplemented both Ca and Se the result was better. As associated with the epidemiological data, it is suggested that in the Se deficient endemic area the incidence of Keshau disease will be enhanced if the EM diet was combined with severely low Ca under certain condition.
