摘　　要：本文讨论《一位女士的画像》女主人公伊莎贝尔·阿切尔的自由观。伊莎贝尔对自由有自己特殊的定义 ,它意味着 :独立自主 ,选择的权利 ,及自我的确立。它是意识的自由 ,更多的意味着思想的而非行为的自由。此外 ,伊莎贝尔对自由的追求体现出一定的矛盾性 :在追求自由和知识的同时 。This paper studies the heroine Isabel Archer's idea of freedom in The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Isabel's concept of freedom consists of the following ideas: independence or liberty, the freedom of choice, and the establishment of individual identity. Her concept of freedom exists more on the level of consciousness. Furthermore, there is a paradox in Isabel's idea of freedom in that while she quests for freedom and knowledge, she is not against the conventional virtues imposed on women by social authorities.
