The purified DIL exhibited a single band of molecular weight about 32 kd by SDS-PAGE. It is a glycoprotein and has a sugar content of 6.2%.DIL is an excellent mitogen. The transformation ratio of human peripheral blood lymphocytes is 87% and the cell division ratio is 15%.The results with 13 strains examined by the test of fluorescent label showed that FITO-DIL could combine specifically with 9 strains that nodulated Desmodium intortum but could not combine any of the other 4 strains that didn't nodulate D. intortum.It revealed a positive biological correlation between the lectin-binding capacily and the nodulating ability,illustrating that the DIL is important in the host-specific infection process which leads to nitrogen fixing symbiosis.
