Objective To observe a dynamic effect of enflurane on the Ca 2+-ATPase activity in different brain region at different anesthesia stages, and explore the anesthetic mechanism of enflurane. Methods Forty femal rats were divided randomly into five groups of control group, induction group, anesthetic group, recovery group, and awake group. The Ca 2+-ATPase activity in the cerebral cortex, brain stem and hippocampus were measured by spectroscopic analysis at different anesthesia stages. Results The activity of Ca 2+-ATPase in different brain regions begun to reduce during the induction stage(P<0.05),and reached to the lowest during anaesthetic stage, and begun to increase during recovery stage but still lower than that in nomal group.Only the decrease in the activity of Ca 2+-ATPase in the brain stem was significant(P<0.05),which recovered almost to the nomal level during awake stage(P>0.05). The praxiology change was also related to the change of Ca 2+-ATPase activity. Conclusion Enflurane could work through inhibiting the activity of brain Ca 2+-ATPase, and the depth of anesththesia was related to the degree of the inhibition.
