Objective: To study the therapeutic efficacy and safety of carvedilol and metoprolol in patients with mild to moderate essential hypertention comparatively. Methods: 83 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertention were randomily divided into two groups:group A (29 patients;and B(54 patients;. The patients of group A received carvediol 12.5 mg Bid and those of group B received metoprolol 12.5 mg Bid; then increased to 25 mg or 50 mg Bid. The study continued for 8 weeks. Results: Blood pressure of group A decreased more significantly from the fourth week to the eighth week after carvedilol treatent than that of pretreatment (P<0.05;. The total effective rate of carvedilol and metoprolol were 79.31% and 59.26% respectively (P<0.05;. The heart rate was mild decreased and a lower incidence of adverse reactions occurred. Conclusion: Comparring with metoprolol, carvedilol is a safer and more effective antihypertension drug.
