Objective To investigate the effects of essential fatty acids (EFA) on the cell construction of cerebella in neonatal rats. Methods Ninety neonatal rats, one month old, were randomly divided into normal, EFA deficiency and fish oil supplement groups and given different feeding stuff for three months respectively. The changes of morphology and structure in cerebella were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining,Nissl and silver staining. Results As compared with the normal group, the number of Purkinye's cells in cerebellum was much less than the fish oil supplement group and the array of cells mentioned above was atactic, and there were many basket cells which were swollen, degenerated and dead in the molecular stratum, and meanwhile the climbing fibers and mossy fibers became sparse, shorter and turbulent in EFA deficiency group. But there were remarkable differences in the cell construction of cerebellum between the normal group and the fish oil supplement group. Conclusion Deficiency of EFA at developmental period can cause the damage of neuron and cell construction in cerebellum. It is necessary for the promoting development and function of cerebellum supplemented EFA during the developing period.
