A Natural Product as Drug Lead against both SARS and Flu

摘　　要：In cooperation with colleagues of Singapore Polytechnic, CAS scientists havediscovered a natural product from fruits that could be a drug lead to battle both severe acuterespiratory syndrome (SARS) and flu viruses. After screening more than two million compounds on ahigh-performance super-computer over the past two years, a research group headed by Prof. ZhuWeiliang from the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) under the CAS Shanghai Institutes forBiological Sciences found a series of compounds that are potent in inhibiting 3CL proteinase, anenzyme that is essential to viral duplication.
