In this paper are discussed the distribution characteristics and its period of evolution of 500hPa height field over the North Pacific ocean from January, 1953 to December, 1977 and their connection with sea temperature and southern oscillation index (SOI) over the North Equatorial Pacific Ocean by means of the expansion of empirical orthdox function (EOF) and spectrum analysis, with the calculation results that the annual evolution ary anomaly shows firstly that the height field is on the extra-high (extra-low) side with great extent. The anomaly has pronounced periods of 60 months (5 years), 40 months (ahout 3. 3 years) and 20 months (about 1. 7 years), and has a marked connection with sea temperature and southern oscillation index at the East Equatorial Pacific Ocean on the period of 60 months and 40 months. Secondly the annual evolutionary anomaly shows that the height field is higher(lower) on the southern side, its pronounced period being 30 months (2. 5 years), 24 months and 15 months (about 1. 3 years) respectively, and furthermore having a marked connection with sea temperature and southern oscillation index (SOI) in the East Equatorial Pacific Ocean on the period of two years.
