The heat shield is cooled through lots of cooling film holes and a single row of cooling slot. Physical models which include the turbulence, combustion and thermal radiation are used. Because of the large variation of density in combustion flow fields, the density-weighted average has been used in conservation equations for considering the influence of density variation. The solution domain spanned the entire region between centerline and afterburner wall, with the heat shield represented as a blockage to the mesh. The enthalpy equation and wall boundarys of heat shield require special handling for two passages in the afterburner. The flame spreading is determined by the gas density. Agreement between predictions and measurements show that the numerical method is fairly reasonable and appropriate for the primary design of the afterburner.
