The drop tower consists of a building 7 meters square by 25 meters tall. Contained within the building is a drop area 22 meters long with a cross section of 4 by 5 meters. A 2-second period of microgravity can be obtained by allowing the experiment package to free fall from the top of the drop area. In order to minimize drag on the experiment package, it was enclosed in a drop shield designed with a high ratio of weight to frontal area and low drag coefficient. The microgravity level is estimated to be about 10-4g.The experiment package was suspended at the top of the drip area by a bomb-hook. No measurable disturbances were imparted to the package by the release system.The recovery system consists of four liquid dampers. The maximum deceleration rate is less than 25 g.
