Its numerical value depends on the ratio of mineral composition and ferromagnesian minerals in soil. The organic soil is characteristic of nonconsolidated sediments, high content of organic matters ,non-regular grain size, longer dry time, high water content and small mass. The measurement of speciflc gravity for the organic soils is different from normal soils.Using a neutral liquid for instance kerosene as medium and utilizing a vacuum exhaust instrument to remove air from soil, the specific gravity could be measured by the specific-gravity bottle method. When preparing samples the dry temperature is 60-80℃ and dry time 12 hr. After measurement the specificgravity of kerosene must be determined to calculate the specific gravity of soil samples. In engineering's soil samples in Nanjing area,the distinguish for organic soils normally include their color, odour and water content. Through the cumulation of measured data for the specific gravity of organic soils, it shows a closely relationship between numerical value of specific gravity and water content, moisture density.
