摘　　要：《红字》是美国浪漫主义时期著名作家霍桑的代表作。霍桑在小说中巧妙地使用象征主义手法,描写了17世纪人们在清教主义统治下的波士顿的生活,着力表现人生在道德与价值、自然与社会的矛盾中的脆弱和悲凉,从而细致剖析了罪与罚的宗教意识对人性道德本质的深远影响。The Scarlet Letter is a masterpiece of Nathaniel Hawthome, who, by means of symbolic image, depicted a vivid portray of the life in Boston under the rule of Puritanism in the 17th century, touched the deepest roots of man＇s moral nature, and inquired into the meaning of life through investigations of religions value or morality towards the punishment as well as the sin itself,
