Based on the analyses of agricultural natural resource and its utilization in hilled red soil areas of Western Zhejiang, three characteristics are identified, namely, subtropical monsonal climate with unevenly seasonal distribution of rainfall at different time and space; a large areas of unreclaimed red soil with low fertility; diversitified crops in a monoculture cropping partten with low productivity and efficiency. This paper has introduced on the research of achievements in regional management at hilled red soil areas in past 15 years (1978-1994). Especially, during “Eighth Five Planning Year period”, 2000 hectar experimental site was establised as national and provincial level projects to solve some key problems. A series of advance has been achieved, such as: a complete set of high yield techniqes under multiple cropping parttens; high quality and yield techniqes of orchard crops plantation; improvement of red soil fertility and rational cropping for protecting and avoiding drought injury; the qualified hybird varietis and management for sheep husbandry; the monitoering on the change of water and soil conservation practice and agricultural ecological model; the selection of suitable and fast growth tree varieties for wind breack and green cover. Infinal, the paper discusses the importance and prospect of sustainable agricultural development in hilled red soil areas and points out the direction and goals in future.
