A number of steady-state models have been developed in recent years to explain the dynamics of CVT; however, they are unable to capture the influence of high-speed inertial effects of the belt on the performance characteristics of a CVT. The present research focuses on developing a detailed transient model to explore and understand the various dynamic interactions in a metal pushing V-belt CVT. This paper uses continuous Coulomb friction approximation theory to model friction between the belt and the pulleys. Studies were conducted to observe the influence of inertial and loading conditions on the slip behaviour and torque transmitting ability of the CVT. The computational scheme, the mathematical models, and the results corresponding to different loading scenarios are discussed. The results indicate the significance of inertial effects on the torque transmission characteristics of a CVT.
