Objective To investigate the prevalence and distribution of metabolic syndrome (MS) in the elder male community population of Beijing. Methods Taking the recommendation of China Diabetics Association as diagnostic criterion, the prevalence of MS in 1 736 elder male cadres, sampled randomly from the 136 communities of garrison in Beijing in Sep. 2003 and May 2004, were analyzed. Results The proportions of respondents with MS, obesity, essential hypertension (EH), hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia were 30. 7%, 39.6%, 62.0%, 56.4% ,and 37.1% respectively. The prevalence of MS and EH in the elder group were similar to those in very old group, while that of obesity and hypertriglyceridemia were significantly lower, that of hyperglycemia was significantly higher, the risk rate of MS in very older group was obviously higher than those in the eider group. The prevalence of MS, glucose metabolism abnormity and hypertension increased with ages, but that of hypertriglyceridemia and obesity gradually decreased with ages. Conclusions The prevalence rate of MS is very high in the elder male community population of Beijing and varies with different ages. It is necessary to do further epidemiologic investigation and intervention on this population.
