Objective To evaluate whether the imbalance between IL-12 and IL-13 serum levels, reflecting Thl/Th2 activity is related to class-specific circulating rheumatoid factors (RF) and anticardiolipin (aCL) antibodies in SLE. Methods The levels of serum IL-12, IL-13, RF and aCL antibodies were measured by ELISA in 31 patients with SLE and healthy controls. Serum auto antibodies and immuno-globulin were measured with the method of indirect immunofiuorescence technique and radioimmunodiffusiun. Results The serum level of IL-13 correlated with those of IgM-RF (rs=0.426; P〈0.01) and IgM-aCL (rs=0.328; P〈0.05), but there were no relationship between IgA-RF, IgG-RF, IgG-aCL and total IgG, IgA and IgM levels. The levels of IgM-RF and lgM-aCL in the group which the ratio of IL-12/IL-13〈1 were significantly higher than those in other two groups. Conclusion The increased levels of both IgM-RF and IgM-aCL in patients with prevalent Th2 activity shows that the predominance of Th2 over Th 1 could drive autoantibody production in SLE patients.
