摘　　要：作为美国现代悲剧的创造者,奥尼尔的剧作在对悲剧根源的探索、审美效果的追求及悲剧人物观诸方面与传统悲剧相比已有了质的飞跃,是一种现代悲剧意识。奥尼尔写出了现代人在一个“上帝已死”的世界里无所适从的状况以及企图重新找回作为一个人的尊严和幸福而不得的悲剧,以自己的实践为现代悲剧的确立和发展作出了贡献。As a founder of American modern tragedy, O＇neil wrote tragedies that modern people attempted but failed to regain human honour and happiness in an unacceptable world where “God is dead”. He made a significant contribution to the foundation and development of modern tragedies on the basis of his own experience and practice. His tragedies underwent a substantial progress on the exploitation to the item of modern tragedy, the pursuit of esthetic effects and senses of tragic character compared with the traditional tragedy, which embody a conciousness of modern tragedies.
