Objectives: To investigate the expression and effects of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and transforming growth factor beta I(TGFβ1)in patients with condyloma acuminatum (CA). Methods: To observe and quantify the blood vessel density, and to detect expression of VEGF and TGFβ1 by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry in 27 specimens of CA and 17 normal human foreskin tissues, respectively. Results: The blood vessel density in CA was significantly higher than that in normal foreskin tissue(t= 5.059, P〈0.01). The expression of mRNA of VEGF and TGFβ1 was higher than that in the nor- mal foreskin (P〈0.05). The distribution of VEGF and TGFβ1 in normal foreskin tissues was mainly in the basal layer, while in CA was throughout the epidermis except the stratum corneum, and the intensity of staining in CA was also significantly stronger than that in the normal foreskin. There was a striking positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and TGFβ1 in CA(r=0.792, P〈0.001). Conclusions: TGFβ1 and VEGF could be produced and secreted by the involved cells of CA, which might be associated with the formation of new blood vessel in CA.
