Objective To investigate the effects of modafinil on flight performance and mood states of military student pilots. Methods Twenty-one male military pilot students were randomly divided into placebo group(n=10)and modafinil group(n=11). Modafinil (200mg) or placebo was given at 10 : 30 (2 h before flying). The electrocardiogram was monitored during flying and flight performance was evaluated by instructors. In addition, the following parameters, including basic vital signs, visual reaction time, critical flicker fusion frequency(CFF), scores of Stanford sleepiness scale (SSS),rating of perceived exertion(RPE) and profile of mood states(POMS) were measured before and after flying. Results There were no significant differences of flight performance, basic vital signs, visual reaction time, CFF between the two groups. Compared with the placebo group, heart rate was significantly increased during flying(P〈0.01),and scores of subjective fatigue feelings were remarkably decreased after flying in modafinil group (P 〈0.05). Conclusions Modafinil given at routine, single dose(200mg) had no significant adverse effect on flight performance, and could significantly enhance the ability of stress reaction and lower the subjective fatigue level.
