Objective To explore the association between the allele frequency of the single nucleotide polymorphism (A79G) in the second exon of the myoglobin gene and physical performance. Methods 104 male soldiers, underwent a distance running program, which consisted of 5000m running with the intensity of 95- 105% ventilatory threshold (VT), 3 times/week for 20 wk. VO2max and VT were measured on a treadmill before and after the running program, and myoglobin gene polymorphism was detected by PCRRFLP. Results The genotype frequencies were as follows- AA = 0.52, AG = 0.45, GG = 0.03 and they were coincident with Hardy - Weinberg equilibrium. No significant changes in three genotypes of the second exon of myoglobin gene were found (P 〉 0.05). VT increased significantly in subjects with AG and GG genotypes. In AA, HR at VT was the only parameter that increased significantly after the running program. The subjects with GG genotype, moreover, increased most in AVO2max% and △VT%, and AA increased least. The present study demonstrated that the allele of G in the second exon of myoglobin gene might contribute to individual differences in endurance training.
