Objective To study the effects of soy isoflavones on bone loss in female rats after simulated weightlessness. Method Twenty four female SD rats were equally divided into 3 groups:one free control group(FC) and two simulated weightlessness groups (group SC and SS). Rats in group FC and SC were fed with normal diet, while those in group SS were fed with diet supplemented with 0.1% (w/w) soy isoflavones. All rats drank pure water ad libitum. Result 1 ) In group SC rats, AKP,BGP and E2 content in serum, femur BMD, and biomechanical parameters ( maximum load, elastic load, elastic energy absorption, maximum stress and elastic stress)were significantly lower than those in group FC rats, whereas concentration of serum calcium was markedly higher than that in group FC rats. 2) In group SS rats, AKP,BGP and E2 content in serum, femur BMD,and biomechanical parameters were significantly higher than those in group SC rats, whereas concentration of serum calcium was markedly higher than that in group SC rats. Conclusion The results suggest that soy isoflavones can stimulate bone formation, decrease bone loss, and improve bone quality in female rats caused by simulated weightlessness. It may possiblely be related to the estrogen-like activity of soy isoflavones.
