This paper proposes a novel system that automates the generation of hot charge schedules. Advanced algorithms are implemented to schedule both lines in parallel. Depending on product mix and market conditions, hot charge rates of up to 85 percent are targeted. The system is currently tested in a new integrated steel plant in China where the objective is to reach a hot charge rate of 80 percent. Increasing the hot charge rate is a difficult task that requires strong teamwork and commitment of each employee: Because of the need for a tight synchronization between the melt shop and the mill, cooperation is required from operators, maintenance staff and the scheduling department.
