Aim To observe the effects of total flavonoids of epimedium (TFE) injection on hemodynamics and myocardial oxygen consumption index in the normally anaesthetized chest-open dogs. Methods The parameters of hemodynamics such as cardiac output (CO), blood pressure, coronary blood flow and the left ventricular pressure(LVP) through cardiac catheterization were determined by pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonic flowineter; the electrocardiogram was measured by BIOPAC polygraphy. Results After the dogs were administrated with the TFE, the heart rate (HR) slowed down, and the systolic blood pressure (SBP) ascended, but the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) declined transiently. The coronary blood flow (CBF) increased while the coronary vascular resistance (CVR) decreased significantly. Although LVP was not changed by TFE, the maximum rise rate and the maximum decline rate of the left ventficular pressure ( ± dp/dtmax) were decreased obviously, whereas the cardiac index(CI) and left ventricular work index(LVWI) were increased. In addition, CO was increased remarkably. Meanwhile the total periphery resistance (TPR) and the myocardial oxygen consumption index were reduced. Conclusion TFE can improve the heart function by increasing the coronary blood flow and decreasing the myocardial oxygen consumption.
