In this paper, the temporal and spatial distribution of the occurring frequency, disaster areas and economic loss of hail disasters in Xinjiang are analyzed based on the data of 900 hail cases occurred in Xinjiang during the period of 1952-2002. The results show that the occurring frequency of hail disasters in Xinjiang increased rapidly from the 1970s, thus the disaster areas were obviously enlarged and the economic loss was significantly increased, the maximum values of occurring frequency of hail disasters and hail disaster areas occurred in 1990, but the most serious economic loss caused by hail disasters occurred in 1995. Generally, the hail disasters in Xinjiang occur mainly during the period from April to September, and the highest values of occurring frequency, disaster area. and economic loss of hail disasters occur in June, May and July respectively. According to the grey correlation disaster evaluation model, Xinjiang can be divided into 5 hail disaster areas, i. e., the most serious disaster area, serious disaster area, moderate disaster area, slight disaster area and very slight disaster area, in which Aksu Prefecture is a key region in preventing hail disasters, and then Kashgar Prefecture, Tacheng Prefecture, Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, and Shihezi region.
