摘　　要：分析了西部地区竞技体育的主要现状,即竞技水平明显滞后于东部地区及中部地区、体育事业经费短缺、奥运贡献度低、优势项目少、发展非均衡性突出等,依据梯度发展、取长补短、适度发展等原则,结合西部地区的地域、人文等特点,提出构建21世纪初西部地区竞技体育层次发展战略及目标体系。Analyzing the present situation of competitive sports in west of China, the writer points out the results as follows： the western athletic level lies behind of the eastern and middle parts of China; the shortage fund in sports ;the low contribution to Olympic Games; not enough advantage items; obviously unbalanced development, etc. According to the principle of step -by -step development, learn from other＇s strong points to offset one＇s weakness, moderate development and combining the characteristics of western geography and culture, the paper puts forward the target system and development strategy in west of China in the early 21st century.
