Objective To measure the dynamic changes of serum leptin, insulin-like growth faetor(IGF-I) and insulin levels in newborns and to explore their relationship with neonatal growth ang development, Methods The serum levels of leptin, IFG-I and insulin in 60 healthy neonates were measured by the method of radioimmunoassay at birth, 4-6 days and 25-28days old. Results The serum leptin levels at 4-6 daysof newborns were (0.61±0.46) ug/L, which were significantly lower than those at birth (8.31±6.70)ug/L, also significantly lower than those at 25-28 days of life (1.64±0.54) ug/L. The rise of serum leptin levels correlated with the body weight gain as well as with the rise of IGF-I and insulin levels occurred between 4-6 and 25-28 days, The descentof serum leptin levels didn't correlate with body weight loss, neither with the reduced levels of insulin occurred between at birth and at 4-6 days old. Conclusions The changes of leptin levels in the newborn period showed positive correlation with neonatal weight, it was suggested the leptin play an important role in regulation of weight and energy homeostasis in neonates and may be a regulative factior in neonatal growth with the IGF-I and insulin.
