From the 18th century to the present time, there have been varied terms to define femininity in American society, but its nature has remained unchanged. In spite of the fact that the civil rights movement and the women's continuous struggle for equality and independence have enabled more and more women to take part in almost every political, economic and social arena, and women's social status has been greatly improved, in this patriarchal society of America, these definitions have been consolidated and reinforced, and they have normalized and controlled women's mind and action. With the help of the American mass media, the standards about feminine beauty and women's social role have considerably influenced the ways the general public assess women.
